SuperReading FAQs

How do these methods work for reading poetry?

For the most part, going fast does not enhance poetry. Our basic method improves comprehension, and you might go a bit faster than before, but you will learn to control your speed to the appropriate rate for maximum enjoyment. With poetry, comprehension is the key, not speed.

How long lasting are the results achieved? Can I maintain my new skills?

The methods taught are very simple and easy to apply. As you keep using them your scores will continue to increase. Students will maintain their reading speed and comprehension with regular practice.

I have technical reading to do. How can you go fast through dense, highly technical material?

The fact is that you will not go through technical materials as fast as pleasure reading. What's important is the "ratio of improvement." You will typically absorb twice the information in half the time. The course was originally designed for learning from textbooks.

I read a lot for pleasure. I like to savor my pleasure novels. Won't going fast ruin the story?

First, you are in total control of your speed. As in your car, although your speedometer says 120 miles per hour, you can go any speed you like. Second, most students report that reading novels feels more like watching a movie because the scenes unfold in real time. Besides, once you're into a book, you lose track of time anyway. If you enjoy yourself and understand the story better, do you really feel obligated to spend unnecessary time in doing it? Spend your freed up time pursuing other interests, or simply read more books.

I read on a computer screen. How do these methods work on computers?

Our methods work beautifully on computer screens.

I read the bible. How do these methods help there?

Reading the bible can often be like reading poetry. There is so much to understand in virtually every line that a fast reading speed makes little sense. For this type of intense reading, comprehension is the goal. SuperReading definitely enhances bible study; and, of course, helps tremendously with the related interpretive materials.

I took a speed reading course. It didn't help me much. How is this different?

SuperReading is not speed reading. There are some similarities, but the fact is that SuperReading works where speed reading does not. We don't skip words or merely skim. We share powerful tools that really work. Otherwise we would not offer the guarantee.

I'm already a fast reader. I'm satisfied with my reading. Why would I want this course?

Your reading speed may well be an above average for a standard reader. The top Reading Effectiveness *(R.E.) score we've seen coming into the course has been around 225. There have been only a handful of these people, who typically come out with an R.E. above 800. Also, most people can achieve a much higher comprehension level than they realize.

My children already gets A's in school. They don't need to read any better. Why would they need this course?

Just because someone shows excellence does not mean that is the final word in their education. One such student who did enter the course showed an improvement of over 2,000%! These young people still get A's, but now have more time to read in depth, or to pursue other activities to have more balance in their lives. Our memory techniques improve their level of recall as well.

How do I know if my people would benefit from your program?

You can do a quick survey, asking them to estimate the number of hours they spend reading each week. Include E-mail, reports, correspondence, memos and journals. You can also ask them how much time they should be spending reading. If you want an exact accounting, we have prepared forms for tracking their reading each hour.

How long do these techniques last?

We see that most people see a five to ten fold increase in their abilities during the five week course. Without regular practice, people slip back to about triple where they came in. That's still very good. With continued practice, they continue to improve in the weeks and months following the course. Their skills become better and more automatic with time.

How many people can you effectively teach at one time?

SuperReading has been taught to groups with as many as 78 participants. I prefer groups of 24 to 30. With an assistant, groups of 50 or 60 can be handled with a good degree of observation. Much larger groups can be accommodated, though individual attention will be sacrificed to a higher degree. With more assistants, more people can be included. We can even work with your trainers after about 30 minutes of preparation.

Is there any minimum number of hours my people need to be reading for the course to pay off?

While being a great reader has numerous benefits, from a bottom-line view, if they are reading more than three hours per week, it's certainly worth it. Do a survey and then ask me again!

I've spoken to some of my people and they feel they read well enough. They say they're faster than most. Are they correct?

Most people have no idea of their speed or comprehension. We've had PhD's take our tests and they are horrified to discover how poor their skills are. Most people only compare themselves to other inadequate readers. Even if they are twice as fast as their co-worker, that's still very slow when compared to even our lowest performing graduates. Also, their comprehension and recall is probably a third of what they think it is.

Besides, who wants to sound like a sluggard to the boss? They probably figure you'll never know for sure what their skills are, so why appear to be a dim bulb? Forget the drug tests, give them a reading test! That's where a big impact is on their productivity.

Simply put, what do we get for our money?

Your people will be able to process written information 3 to 15 times faster, with far better comprehension and recall than at present. They will be reading more information in less time with better results. They can use that time they were spending on reading on what you actually hired them to do.

If you follow the numbers, it means that with the time freed up, you are buying back the hours of a typical engineer at about 50 cents an hour! If that doesn't make bottom line sense, what could?

So bottom line, how much is poor reading costing my company?

My answer is always conservative, so there are nice surprises later. For 100 employees earning $50K per year, it's costing you $1,000,000 per year for them to sit there and read. And that's if they only read 8 hours per week!

For $40,000, you could reclaim 20,000 hours of technical work to your efforts. Whatever your problems and deadlines, I have to believe that 20,000 hours would have to make an impact. If not, you need to seriously look at your business. For the price of a good Admin, you can get 20,000 hours of technical expertise. Of course, that's just the first year. They are free after that! And remember, these figures are a worst case scenario that would mean your people didn't even triple, so the classes would be free!

Sometimes I'm reading along, I get to the bottom of the page, and I realize that I have almost no idea of what I just read. Will SuperReading help?

Absolutely. This is what we're all about. From day one you will get two tools that virtually eliminate that from happening. You would have to be really exhausted or quite ill for that to happen again. The only other possibility would be a traumatic event in your life that leaves you in shock. I only mention such things because that's what it would take to throw off your focus when you use our simple yet powerful techniques.

Imagine how much time will be saved just from preventing that phenomenon from occurring. Our students tell us that before the course, that would happen all the time. It made them feel guilty to be reading because they weren't spending time on their job assignments. They felt especially bad when they would take 20 or 30 minutes and realize they had been daydreaming most of the time.

We had a Needs Analysis done and reading skills didn't come up. Why not?

Two reasons. Few people are aware that reading takes up so much valuable time. I recently spoke with a Fortune 500 company that just sent out an employee needs survey last week. There wasn't one question about reading. Not a single one. Yet most people these days spend at least 20% of their time reading. That's a workday a week! Many are spending 40% and more. How would you feel if your people just left work at noon next Thursday? That's how much time can be lost to ineffective reading skills.

The second reason is that nobody believes that anything can be done to effectively help in this area, especially when it comes to technical reading. There are a variety of reasons, ranging from simple ignorance to "we tried speed reading once." SuperReading has solved the problems inherent in traditional "speed reading." The fact that technical readers can save 50% to 90% of their reading time and get better recall must be recognized sooner or later.

We're in a city in which you don't teach. What can we do about classes?

A SuperReading instructor can do a kick-off seminar and leave tests behind for each participant. Daily E-mail follow up keeps them working on their techniques. Video conferencing can also be arranged for an additional fee.

What about our employees whose native language is not English? (ESL)

People whose native language is not English are guaranteed to at least double; though virtually all do at least triple. We can offer special classes just for ESL employees. We do this because they have special needs at high speeds. Many of them still translate in their head, and this slows them down. It just takes them a little longer to get past that. Having their own class also saves the English speakers from having to wait for the others to finish.

While participants are always polite and respectful, the waiting can be a source of frustration. Here they are finishing a passage in record time, then they have to wait. And although the ESL people are breaking their own records, the perception is "I went real fast and now I'm just sitting here."

Do you remember when some functions on the computer routinely took 10 to 15 seconds or more? Now, if we have to wait more than a second or two, it seems like an eternity. It's the same perception.

Why can't I just buy some books on speed reading and hand them out?

Traditional speed reading does not address the needs of technical readers. I've seen no book that provides anything like what we've got. Besides, you know and I know only 2% of them will even pick it up. We are the only company that guarantees to at least triple the abilities even if they have taken other courses. We're that much better.
